Stowmarket Striders presents the
Joe Cox

Half Marathon

Sunday 29th March 2009 11:05am

Part of the England Athletics East Grand Prix Series

(UK Licence number 11392)

***Entries On The Day***

Introduction

The Stowmarket Striders are proud to host the Joe Cox Half Marathon on Sunday
29th March 2009 starting at 11:05am.

This is the second year of this new course.
Proceeds from this race go to the Multiple Sclerosis Charity in memory of Joe Cox.

This race replaced the Joe Cox 10 miler because we think that a half-marathon is a better distance for this time of year as it fits better into London Marathon training schedules. We would also like to share more of our fabulous Suffolk Countryside and have a lovely scenic rural country route for the runners.  The route also enables supporters to encourage their team members and slip from point to point without impacting on other runners.

JUNIOR FUN RUN: 10.15am

There is also a Junior Fun Run of approximately one mile on a traffic free course within the grounds of the school. Entries for this will be taken on the day only.

We hope you all enjoy the race and welcome any comments (good ones of course!) and suggestions you may have.

Directions

The race headquarters and start is at Finborough School, The Hall, Great Finborough, Stowmarket, Suffolk IP14 3EF.  Click here for a street map of the area.

Finborough School is situated in the village of Great Finborough, two miles west of Stowmarket on the B1115.

Travel Directions from Ipswich -  From Ipswich take the A14 towards Bury St Edmunds.  Take the 1st exit marked for Stowmarket on the A1120, and turn left at the roundabout.  Continue straight over the next roundabout and down the hill on the dual-carriage way.  Taking the right-hand lane turn right at the bottom of the hill.  At the next roundabout, take the 2nd exit (signposted Combs Ford). After 400m, go straight over the mini roundabout towards the Magpie pub. Bear left in front of the pub then turn right at the next mini roundabout (signposted Gt Finborough) onto Combs Lane. Follow this lane (40mph limit) to a T junction. Turn left onto the B115 (signposted Gt Finborough). The school is on the right hand side after about 1 mile and just before the village of Gt Finborough.

Travel Directions from Bury St Edmunds - From Bury St Edmunds take the A14 towards Ipswich. Leave the A14 at Junction 39 (Signposted Stowmarket A1308, Haughley & Wetherden). At the roundabout at the top of the slip road take the exit marked A1308 Stowmarket. Follow this road for half a mile, under the A14 and at the roundabout turn right and take the next left up Chilton Way.  At the end of this road turn right down Onehouse Road. Follow this road to a T junction and turn left down the lane. At the next T junction turn right onto the B115 (signposted Gt Finborough). The school is on the right hand side after about 1.2 miles and just before the village of Gt Finborough.

Car parking is available at the school and follow the marshal’s directions.  Please do not park on the road.

The Race

The 13.1 mile course has one or two undulations.  The course heads out from Finborough School through the villages of Buxhall, Rattlesden and Brettenham then returns to Finborough via Buxhall. A map of the course is available here.

The first and last 400m of the course will be controlled by police. Please follow the instructions of the police and marshals at all times. The police have requested that at all other times all runners keep to the left hand side of the road unless told otherwise.

For safety reasons the course will close at 2.00pm. Anyone still on the course after this time may be running without the support of marshals.

The Red Cross will be present for those requiring medical attention.  If you see anyone in distress during the race, please advise a race marshal as soon as possible to call for medical assistance.

A copy of the risk assessment will be available on the race notice board.

Use of audio equipment

Audio equipment with earphones seriously inhibits the user from hearing traffic approaching from behind and clearly hearing instructions from race marshals. The use of all such equipment is therefore not permitted during the race

Facilities

Refreshments, changing facilities and toilets are available at the school.

We will have a number of masseurs available after the race to ease those miles out of your legs!

Results

We will endeavour to display as many of the results as possible on the race notice board as competitors complete the race, and after the race.

Full results will be available from this website (www.stowmarketstriders.org.uk) hopefully by the evening of race day.  A postal results service may also be available.
