Marathon 2000
Here are the results for the marathon. Click here for the race report.
"Twenty six Striders strode, ran, jogged (and some almost crawled) around the London Marathon in April.
The marathon is never a race for the faint hearted and this years’ event proved to be its usual tough physical and mental challenge to all those who took part.
Eleven Striders set "personal bests". But several of the others found it more of a challenge than usual, missing out on their hoped for times by between one minute and eighty minutes (this particular runner has taken the lottery winner’s stance of "No publicity"). Who knows whether it was not enough training, the wrong race preparation, the heat of the midday sun or just one of those things.
But whatever the time, everyone who completed the race was a winner in their own right and deserved their medal.
The other winners are the various charities who will benefit from the £10,000 that the Striders raised by running the marathon.
For the next few months we will spend the summer running relatively sensible distances of 5 miles or 10 kilometres (and at the very most a half marathon or two).
By the time the entry forms for next year’s marathon are issued the painful memories of this year’s race will have faded but the pleasant memories will remain and we will all enter again, well most of us.
On Friday, 30 June you could also run one of the most scenic 5 mile races in Suffolk. Stowmarket Striders are hosting their annual Friday night five mile race around the grounds of Haughley Park. To refresh tired legs there will be a barbecue and beer tent and to keep the kids amused there will also be a short fun-run. Advance entry is only £5.00 to runners affiliated to a running club (£6.00 to unaffiliated runners). Entry forms should be available on our notice board at the Leisure Centre.
If you would like more information on the club or the Haughley Park run you can contact Chris Gladwell on 01449 676957 - or meet us at the Leisure Centre on Tuesday or Thursday evenings at 7.30pm."
