Stowmarket Striders Scenic 7

Well it rained! Despite the continual drizzle, the scenic 7 saw nearly 20% increase in numbers over the previous year. We saw runners from many different counties including West Yorkshire, Hertfordshire, Bucks, Devon, London, West Midlands and Bedfordshire. That doesn't include a representative from France and America. So a big thank you to all of you for making this race possible and successful. I guess a thank you also goes to the Unofficial Runners World Forum Running Club (URWFRC).

David Miller convincingly won the race for the 3rd year in a row and a big well done to Gillian Leathers coming in 1st lady and taking the ladies open course record. As for the team positions, the men's was won by Felixstowe Road Runners and the Ladies by St Edmund Pacers.

“Soaked of Suffolk”

It was just under two weeks before this years London Marathon that I promised the Stowmarket Striders Secretary (Katy Nash) and the Club’s Website Manager and her husband Richard that I would run the Scenic 7 later in the year. Before you ask it was my birthday and at that point no alcohol of any description had been consumed I can assure you, makes me think my decision was even more suspect than I first imagined.

Katy had assured me that there would be idyllic weather conditions with clear blue skies, bright sunshine for the Scenic Sunny 7 as she called it. So with my Shades and sun tan Lotion, packed in my running bag to combat the extreme heat I was going to experience I headed to Suffolk.

Katy and Richard gave me a bed to sleep in on Saturday night, with the precautionary words of “Remember don’t show your bum to Bramford in the morning “. Was Bramford their three legged cat I wondered, but with these words ringing in my ears I went to bed on what turned out to be a moonless night!!.

The Morning dawned and having made the journey to the Leisure centre at Stowmarket, I discovered that the clear blue skies and bright sunshine were conspicuous in their absence as was Katy ( a former Suffolk Hide and Seek Champion). In their place were grey skies and heavy rain o.k. I exaggerate mild rain at first.

The race was scenic with a few inclines, and was well marshaled by those who had volunteered to stand in the rain to assist the runners. A big thank you also should go to Sam Brett Aged 9 who designed the T-Shirt.

Will I come back and run the race again the answer is yes if invited, so Bramford be warned, and by that stage Suffolk’s former Hide and seek champion may have come out of hiding.
