  Plymouth 1/2 Marathon

29th May 2005

After a knee injury and little training for some weeks after our move to Plymouth I was discussing running with a guy at work who had a place in the 1/2 and couldn't run [Bob - his name wouldn't be Stuart would it...?].  I know it's to be frowned on but I needed some incentive to get started again. So 3 weeks ago I began training just on my own around the local area.

Still wasn't sure I was ready but Sunday came bright and still for a change so I went for it.  Under the pseudonym I lined up.  633 - always liked that number -Dam Busters-.  I joined the masses at the 2hr marker, with the fancy dressers, I just wanted to get round 1st mile down hill off the Hoe, quite steep but the realisation that the finish was the same as the start made me wary.  At 4 miles I caught the 1.45 pace group with their banners so joined them to see how I was going.  Somehow after 5 miles only one slight up gradient, where are the hills?  Plymouth is all hills!!!

Now out of the city we turned into a large park and there at mile 6 a mountain!!  I nearly made it to the top before I had to walk a few paces and then it was over the top and a long gentle drop for about a mile before a short steep climb into Elburton with the crowds again clapping and encouraging. Through the underpass and the turn for home along the dual carriageway.  I'm feeling remarkably good and the competitive streak begins to kick in as I start to chase groups in front.  I have no idea of my pace as I couldn't read my watch.

Expecting the 1.45 'ers to come past any moment.  Racing a group of youths back in to the city increases my confidence and suddenly we're at the Barbican, 12miles and here's the steep uphill back to the Hoe.  Had to walk a few steps again before the crowds encouraged me to push on and I managed an extra effort over the last 1/2 mile.  The finish, the clapping cheering crowds line the run in to the finish banner.1hr 42.05 by my watch, happy with that after the long lay-off.  I have my motivation back.

Fancy Dublin Marathon anyone !!!!!
